Traveling ‘Frontline Prophet: James Baldwin’ exhibit lands at Wright Museum

A unique traveling art exhibit, “Frontline Prophet: James Baldwin,” has made its way to The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. <a href="https://www.thewright.org/exhibitions/frontline-prophet-james-baldwin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The exhibition</a>, created by Detroit-based artist <a href="https://www.sabrinanelsonart.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sabrina Nelson</a>, offers an intimate exploration of the influential writer and activist James Baldwin in celebration of his centennial birthday. The exhibit features a diverse array of works, including a seven-year sketchbook study, vivid paintings on paper and canvas, video projections, installations, and augmented reality experiences. “Frontline Prophet” not only honors Baldwin’s life but also encourages a reflection on his enduring relevance in contemporary discussions of race, identity, and activism.

Nelson, a seasoned interdisciplinary artist and educator with over 37 years of experience, has exhibited her work nationally and internationally. Her practice spans various media from painting and sculpture to performance and art installations. Alongside her artistic career, she has made significant contributions as an educator serving at institutions like the College for Creative Studies and the Detroit Institute of Arts. 
Nelson sat down with “American Black Journal” <a href="https://wordpress.detroitpbs.org/american-black-journal/contributors/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">host Stephen Henderson</a> to share insights into her creative process and her deep connection to Baldwin’s work. She also expresses her hope that visitors will come to understand Baldwin’s impact and legacy, both past and present, through the exhibit.

African World Festival returns to Detroit’s Hart Plaza for 41st annual celebration of African diaspora

The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History <a href="https://www.thewright.org/news/charles-h-wright-museum-presents-works-cch-pounder-kone-collection-double-id" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has opened</a> “Double ID,” a new art exhibit featuring 54 works from the private collection of acclaimed actress CCH Pounder. Running through Oct. 20, <a href="https://www.thewright.org/exhibitions/double-id" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the exhibit</a> showcases the CCH Pounder-Koné Collection and delves into the representation of Black men through the lens of W.E.B. The Wright Museum opens ‘Double ID’ exhibit from TV actress, art collector CCH Pounder

Charles H. Wright Museum enhances exhibits with technology

The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History – more affectionately called <a href="https://www.thewright.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Wright</a> – has been educating Detroiters and visitors on African American history since 1966. The museum continues to expand, introducing new exhibits, bolstering its technology, and expanding its performance theater.  
The newest permanent exhibit at the museum is “<a href="https://www.thewright.org/exhibitions/honoring-life-and-legacy-judge-damon-keith" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Honoring the Life and Legacy of Judge Damon J. Keith</a>.” The exhibit showcases the new innovative technology the museum is implementing, taking the viewer through the timeline of Judge Keith’s life from childhood to his service as a federal district judge.

“What [the technology] would allow us to do then is whenever new information comes, let’s say on Judge Keith, we find out something we didn’t know about him, we’re able to go in and reprogram that, add the images, and have a very contemporary view of that subject,” Charles H. Wright Museum President and <a href="https://www.thewright.org/news/neil-barclay-announced-new-ceo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CEO Neil Barclay</a> said. 
The Wright is also revamping its theater, leaning into performances, including music, poetry and film. “We doubled the size of the stage, we brought in all new state of the art theatrical equipment, surround sound equipment, equipment to be able to do film and to show movies in the theater,” Barclay said. “And more comfortable seats.” The <a href="https://www.thewright.org/general-motors-theater" target="_blank" rel="noopener">General Motors Theater</a> is now open and is also available for rent.
