‘Is That Black Enough For You?!?’ documentary chronicles Black cinema revolution of the 1970s

Is that Black enough for you? Acclaimed filmmaker, film critic and historian Elvis Mitchell asks that question in his new Netflix documentary. The film is the directorial debut for Mitchell, a Highland Park, Michigan native and Wayne State University alum. It takes viewers on a whirlwind journey through the transformative years of Black cinema during the late 1960s through the 1970s, paying tribute to Black films that had a major influence on Hollywood.  

Through personal monologues from Mitchell and interviews with Black luminaries such as Harry Belafonte, Lawrence Fishburne, Whoopi Goldberg, Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya and more, the documentary paints a striking picture of the golden age of Black cinema and tells the story of how it helped redefine Blackness in film.  

“American Black Journal” host Stephen Henderson sat down with Mitchell to talk about “Is That Black Enough For You?!?”, which is being shown at the 2023 Detroit Free Press Film Festival. Plus, Mitchell talks about his Bob Allison (Allesee) Endowed Chair in Media position at Wayne State University that begins in May 2023.

Bookstock 2023 raises money for literacy, education projects by recycling used media

The Detroit area’s largest used book and media sale, Bookstock, returns this year to Laurel Park Place in Livonia to once again benefit literacy and education projects in Southeast Michigan. The annual used book and media sale runs April 23-30 this year and will feature more than 300,000 used books, DVDs, CDs, books on tape, vinyl records and more. Eight hundred volunteers coordinated the event. Leftover Bookstock items are donated to area nonprofits and charities in the community.   

“American Black Journal” host Stephen Henderson sits down with Bookstock Honorary Chairperson Neal Rubin of the Detroit Free Press, Davison Elementary School teacher Kenya Posey, and Posey’s student Syeda Tausiyah, last year’s annual Bookstock essay contest winner, to get the details about this year’s event.
