A path to healing: National Day of Racial Healing promotes unity and understanding

Jan 21, 2025

The National Day of Racial Healing is observed annually on the day after Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It provides an opportunity for individuals and communities across the U.S. to come together and engage in conversations that foster racial healing.

The observance, launched in 2017 by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, builds on the work of its Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) partners, who are committed to advancing racial equity and addressing the systemic and historical impacts of racism. It encourages people to confront racial equity issues with honesty and empathy, helping to build trust and restore community connections.

As the nation commemorates this year’s National Day of Racial Healing, W.K. Kellogg Foundation President and CEO La June Montgomery Tabron talks with host Stephen Henderson about the importance of holding these crucial conversations. She encourages individuals and communities to lead discussions focusing on shared experiences and fostering understanding through common ground.

Plus, they discuss two books written by Montgomery Tabron aimed at advancing racial healing. “How We Heal” provides a roadmap for individuals and communities to process their healing journey, while “Our Differences Make Us Stronger” is a children’s book that helps younger generations understand and embrace diversity.
