Thursday on One Detroit:

• Eviction Concerns: Some states have lifted their moratorium on evictions in recent weeks. However, Governor Whitmer recently extended the eviction moratorium for renters through June 30^th. Landlords are also struggling to cover their mortgages. Non-profit groups are trying to provide assistance to renters in order to stave off evictions, which could lead to an increase in vacancies. Christy McDonald talks with Ted Philips (United Community Housing Coalition) and Wayde Kohler (Wayne County Real Estate Investors Association). 

• Police Brutality & Systemic Racism Roundtable: Stephen Henderson talks with Karen Dumas (Communications Strategist) Brandon Brice (“Straight Talk” host, 910 AM Superstation), Kerry Leon Jackson (The Urban Conservative), and Greg Bowens (PR & Political Strategist) for an in-depth discussion of the national and global protests against police brutality and systemic racism. 

• Can we do better in policing here in Detroit? According to Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, there’s room for improvement. Napoleon tells One Detroit’s Nolan Finley the police union has been problem protecting cops he’s wanted to fire. Meanwhile the Sheriff’s Department needs hundreds more recruits and it’s been a struggle finding people to do the job. Nolan has this revealing conversation with the Wayne County Sheriff.

• Shatila Bakery: How is this Dearborn landmark doing during the Covid-19 pandemic? One Detroit’s Will Glover talks with Shatila Bakery’s Vice President, Nada Shatila, about ramping up their shipping orders as well as how other businesses find themselves taking loans to stay afloat with no idea when they’ll re-open or how they’ll pay back the government bail-outs.
