One Detroit – Clawson / Civility in Politics / Sundown Towns

  • Clawson: One City Under a Pandemic: These are historic times. One Detroit looks at how COVID-19 touches Clawson, a city of two square miles in Southeast Oakland County. To revive its once flourishing dining scene, business owners are recalibrating, and one local couple is taking the plunge—betting it all on a new venture as restaurants are still held at a 50% seating capacity. In the second of a series of reports, One Detroit’s Bill Kubota and Chris Jordan, past and current Clawson residents, see how the city is lending its support to keep things going during the pandemic.
  • Stephen and Nolan Talk Civility in Politics: Post Labor Day in a big election year always means campaigns ramp up, but in a COVID-19 world, campaigning is pretty different. Civility in messaging seems to be at an all-time low. But One Detroit contributors, Nolan Finley of the Detroit News and Stephen Henderson of American Black Journal have spent a lot of time studying and talking about civility in our world—especially coming from two different political philosophies in an intensely polarized time.
  • Sundown Towns: This summer, protests against police brutality and white supremacy have mostly taken place in the city of Detroit, but the suburbs are now beginning to grapple with their own racist history and policies. Historically, sundown towns have been defined as places where African Americans weren’t permitted to live. One Detroit Associate Producer, Will Glover, spoke with BridgeDetroit’s Bryce Huffman about his recent report on how many Detroit suburbs are wrestling with their legacy of being sundown towns that carried out anti-black policies.
