Placemaking — it’s the term often used to describe the process of increasing the quality of shared public spaces where business owners, workers and families can gather. When it comes to placemaking, what efforts has Michigan put forth and have those investments paid off today? 

From One Detroit’s Future of Work virtual town hall, “Creating Communities: The Path to Placemaking,” Future of Work host Will Glover talks with  TechTown President & CEO Ned Staebler, Detroit Future City Chief Executive Officer Anika Goss, Author of “Reimagining Detroit” and former Detroit Free Press Senior Business Columnist John Gallagher, and Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) Planning Director Kevin Vettraino about whether Southeast Michigan has the infrastructure, amenities and investments to attract and retain the future of workforce talent, the barriers against placemaking efforts, how the future of work intersects with residents’ quality of life, and the need for strategic city planning and public transit in Michigan.

Michigan Redesigned: Developing Careers, Investments in the State’s Design Industry

Taking a look around Michigan’s major cities, design is everywhere. The creativity of designers can be seen throughout Michigan in the clothes we wear, the architecture of the our cities and the cars we drive, but still, globally Detroit isn’t recognized for having a strong design industry. How can Michigan develop more design jobs across the state, and prepare young designers for the future of these careers?

Can Detroit Become an International Fashion City? Detroit Brand Deviate Fashion Thinks So

When it comes to fashion, not many people place Detroit among the cities where the design industry thrives. Detroiters may know it here, but one Detroit-based fashion brand, Deviate Fashion, started with the goal to put Detroit on the map as a fashion city around the world. Founded by sisters Cassidy and Kelsey Tucker, Deviate is on a mission to help develop and bolster Detroit’s reputation as a respected fashion city.

One Detroit Associate Producer and Future of Work Host Will Glover sat down with the Deviate Fashion co-founders at their talent incubator in a metro Detroit Boys & Girls Club to talk about the business of fashion in Detroit, the infrastructure investments and resources the City and its creatives will need to develop Detroit as a design hub, and the different challenges Detroit currently faces to make it on the list of fashion capitals like Los Angeles or New York City.
