One Detroit Weekend: August 4, 2023

Looking for some summer fun in Detroit? Hear some great music at the 42nd Annual Dearborn Homecoming or eat dinner in a sunflower field at the Frankenmuth Flower Festival. Plus, you can browse the Art Fair at Belle Isle or head to Ann Arbor to hear from author Ann Patchett about her new novel. For a more active experience, go to the Motown Museum’s Rocket Plaza to learn the hustle.

Check out everything you can do around town during the August 4th weekend and beyond on “One Detroit Weekend” with contributors Peter Whorf and Cecelia Sharpe of 90.9 WRCJ.

List of upcoming events: 

  • Attend the 42nd annual Dearborn Homecoming festival Aug. 4-6, which has a carnival, live music with performances from Natasha Bedingfield and the Kielbasa Kings, two days of fireworks, art installations and more. 
  • Have dinner among the flowers at the Frankenmuth Flower Festival Aug 4-6 at Grandpa Tiny’s Farm. Visitors will have a chance to pick sunflowers and check out a craft and artisan showcase featuring home décor, jewelry, artwork and more.  
  • Take a visit to Belle Isle Art Fair, happening 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Aug. 5 and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Aug. 6. The art fair will feature juried artists, family activities, music, and the Motor City Mermaids, who will discuss the importance of clean waterways. 
  • Hustle over to the Motown Museum’s Rocket Plaza and get your groove on from 12 – 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5 for the “Dancing in the Street: Hustle” dance class taught by Chevy of RCI Studios. 
  • Join award-winning author Ann Patchett at the Michigan Theater Auditorium Wednesday, Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. for a conversation about her latest novel “Tom Lake.” The event is presented by the Literati Bookstore.  
  • Walk around the 41st annual Allen Park Street Fair, running from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Aug 4-5 on Allen Road, between Southfield and Roosevelt. The two-day celebration of arts and crafts features other attractions, such as live music, food booths, a kids’ zone, and more. 
  • Hear one of Detroit’s most iconic jazz musicians, Dennis Coffey, at the Detroit Historical Museum’s “Jazz in the Streets of Old Detroit” event from 8-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10. Proceeds from this event will help support the work of the Black Historic Sites Committee. 
  • Revel in the music of Grateful Dead with the Dark Star Orchestra’s performance 6 – 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10 at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. The band performs from the Dead’s 30 years of music, allowing fans young and old to share in the experience.
