One Detroit Weekend: June 2, 2023

Are you looking for some arts, culture, music and family-friendly fun to experience in Southeast Michigan? From ways to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month to a sunset dinner cruise on the Detroit Princess Riverboat and an Ethiopian cooking class, Detroit has something for everyone this weekend.

One Detroit contributor Cecelia Sharpe of 90.9 WRCJ shares what’s happening around metro Detroit during the June 2 weekend and into next week on “One Detroit Weekend.”

List of Upcoming Events:

  • Come experience the Grand Prix in Detroit and take a dinner cruise on the Detroit Princess Riverboat from 7-9:30 p.m. Saturday, June 3. Live entertainment will be performed by the Prolifics, a tribute to Detroit’s Motown music, and dining will include a prime rib carving station and buffet entrees.
  • Journey into the cosmos with Evening Star, the jazz ensemble created by Detroit drummer Tariq Gardner, who is performing at Cliff Bell’s through June 4. The ensemble blends elements of jazz, neo-soul, Afro-Cuban, Negro spirituals, hip hop and more to take listeners on a space odyssey.
  •  Attend a performance of “Sweat,” a Detroit Repertory Theatre production, written by Lynn Nottage and director by Jeff Nahan, about a group of friends working in a Pennsylvania factory who discover where loyalties truly lie as they each fight to make ends meet. Performances run through June 25.
  • Distinguished for its vibrant flavors, Ethiopian cuisine could seem difficult to replicate at home. Unless, of course, Helina Melaku of Konjo Me is your instructor. Join Chef Helina for a two-hour workshop where she’ll guide students through how to create her two favorite authentic Ethiopian dishes for your dinner table.
  • Learn how to establish and maintain native plants and connect with local experts specializing in native landscapes at The Native Plant Expo & Marketplace from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 3 at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds. The expo and marketplace will offer over 100 Michigan native plants from Michigan growers.
  • Celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month at Arts & Pride at the Madison Heights Civic Center Park from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, June 4. The event will include face painting, caricatures, custom Pride buttons, music and more. Plus, bring a white T-shirt, bag, bandana or other clothing items to participate in a special art activity for everyone.
