One Detroit – Oxford Shooting Impacts, Gun Control Debate, ‘Once Upon A December Eve’

This Week on One Detroit:

In the Wake of Oxford, Schools Deal with Difficult Questions

The aftermath of the Oxford school shooting left ripple effects across Michigan communities this past week, closing more than a dozen schools and leaving students, parents and teachers fearful and having to cope with the fallout. Now, the Oxford community, and others, are working to acknowledge people’s fears, answer the tough questions and provide support for those coping. One Detroit’s Christy McDonald speaks with Karen Anthony, Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant for Oakland Schools, which is providing support across the county in the wake of the tragedy.

Educators React to Oxford Shooting and How They’re Supporting Students

Happening only roughly 27 miles north of his school, Royal Oak High School teacher Mike Conrad said “It may as well be right across the street, because it’s affecting us.” Following the Oxford High School shooting, teachers from across metro Detroit connected with PBS NewsHour’s Student Reporting Labs shared their perspectives and how they’re supporting students.

After Oxford, Should Michigan Have Stricter Gun Ownership Policies?

Every time a mass shooting occurs in the United States, the debate over gun control and ownership flares up. In the wake of the Oxford High School shooting, the discussion continues as American Black Journal host Stephen Henderson and Nolan Finley of the Detroit News talk about the aggressive strategy taken by the Oakland County Prosecutor, where Michigan stands on responsible gun ownership laws, and how gun owners can be part of the gun violence solution.

‘Once Upon A December Eve’ Returns Live & Online

It’s a metro Detroit holiday tradition that goes back to 2007 — Alice McAllister Tillman’s “Once Upon A December Eve” performance returns, in partnership with the Great Lakes Performing Artist Associates, to the Garden Theater at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12 or live streamed online. As an experienced vocalist in a range of styles, Tillman will be seen performing classical, jazz, blues, spiritual and pop holiday arrangements with help from her three brothers and a 20-piece orchestra. One Detroit’s Bill Kubota caught up with Tillman to discuss her musical upbringing with her family, how the holiday tradition started, and what viewers can expect from this year’s show.
