Before joining The Post, Kainaz was Vox&#8217;s first-ever visuals editor. And before that she was an editor on NPR’s Visual Team, where she had multiple roles in NPR&#8217;s “Planet Money Makes a T-shirt” project, including managing producer, photographer and videographer.
The project won NPR numerous awards, including a News and Documentary Emmy.  In 2010, she was a Fulbright Scholar and completed a short film on the Parsi Zoroastrian community in Mumbai. 
In 2020, Amaria was honored with the John Long Ethics Award by the National Press Photographers Association for her writing and criticism on the photojournalism industry and visual language. Kainaz began her career as a local newspaper photographer.

He has led or helped oversee four Pulitzer Prize-winning lines of coverage as an editor on The Washington Post&#8217;s National staff. Most recently, he shepherded The Post’s abortion coverage in the wake of the Supreme Court decision that struck down Roe v Wade, which won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize in National Reporting.
He has served as The Post’s senior politics editor, leading political coverage during the Trump administration, and was the founding editor of the paper’s Politics Investigations and Enterprise team.
Before becoming an editor in 2013, Wallsten was a White House correspondent for The Post and a political reporter for the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald and St. Petersburg Times. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina, where he was editor of The Daily Tar Heel.

Silvia won the National Association of Hispanic Journalist’s Elaine Rivera Civil Rights and Social Justice award in 2022 for her work on the largely untold crisis of police violence against Latinos. 
She joined The Post in February 2021 from the San Antonio Express-News, where she covered immigration and border security, winning Texas APME Star Reporter of the Year in 2019. Silvia is vice president of NAHJ’s  D.C. Chapter.

Fairfax Collegiate Professor of Public Policy; a university diversity and social transformation professor; a professor of sociology; a research and community impact fellow involved in an anti-racism collaborative.

In Spring 2022, the University of Michigan Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, Wallace House Center for Journalists, and Democracy &amp; Debate launched the series “<a href="https://wordpress.detroitpbs.org/articles/policy-talks-at-the-ford-school/">Democracy in Crisis: Views from the Press</a>,” launched a series featuring award-winning journalists to share their insights into the forces threatening and protecting American democratic structures and systems. The series, which will continue into the 2023-24 academic year, also explores the current state of journalism and the role of the press in upholding democratic institutions.

<h3>From Bill de Blasio&#8217;s Bio: </h3>
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-32887" src="https://wordpress.detroitpbs.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/de-blasio-feature-image-1090x681-1-e1698088380108.jpeg" alt="" width="220" height="250" />Bill de Blasio is an American political leader who served as the 109th mayor of New York City from 2014 to 2021. A member of the Democratic Party, he held the office of New York City Public Advocate from 2010 to 2013. De Blasio started his career as an elected official on the New York City Council, representing the 39th district in Brooklyn from 2002 to 2009. As mayor, de Blasio led NYC through the COVID-19 pandemic, turning what was once a global epicenter into the safest city in the country. In 2014, de Blasio created a groundbreaking initiative which ensured that early childhood education became a universal right in the five boroughs. The universal Pre-K and 3-K programs in NYC have become a national model. During his tenure, NYC financed the preservation and construction of over 200,000 affordable homes, the most created by any administration in the City’s history.
In 2019, de Blasio launched a first-in-the-nation, 6-point action plan to end long-term homelessness. “The Journey Home” initiative was designed to increase access to housing and health care in combination with rapid-response outreach efforts for homeless individuals living in the streets. In fulfilling his campaign promise to end a “tale of two cities,” de Blasio implemented policies which successfully reduced income inequality among New Yorkers and fought alongside them to secure a $15 minimum wage for all workers. In response to the growing climate crisis, de Blasio and the NYC Council passed the Climate Mobilization Act (or the NYC Green New Deal) to make NYC net-carbon-neutral by 2050, as well as groundbreaking legislation to reduce building emissions and to end fossil fuel use in new buildings.
Prior to being an elected official, de Blasio served as the campaign manager for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s successful senatorial campaign of 2000 and got his start in NYC government working for Mayor David Dinkins. De Blasio graduated from New York University with a B.A. in Metropolitan Studies and from Columbia University with an M.A. in International Affairs.
<h3>From Shobita Parthasarathy&#8217;s Bio:</h3>
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-32886" src="https://wordpress.detroitpbs.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/parthasarathy-shobita-profile-1800x2280-1.jpeg" alt="" width="197" height="250" />Shobita Parthasarathy is a professor of public policy and director of the Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program. Her research focuses on the comparative and international politics and policy related to science and technology. She is interested in how to develop innovation, and innovation policy, to better achieve public interest and social justice goals. Much of her work has focused on the governance of emerging science and technology, particularly those that have uncertain environmental, social, ethical, political, and health implications.
She is the author of multiple articles and two books: Building Genetic Medicine: Breast Cancer, Technology, and the Comparative Politics of Health Care (MIT Press 2007; paperback 2012), which influenced the 2013 U.S. Supreme Court case challenging the patentability of human genes; and Patent Politics: Life Forms, Markets, and the Public Interest in the United States and Europe (University of Chicago Press, 2017) which won the Robert K. Merton Prize from the American Sociological Association. Her new research focuses on equity in innovation policy on the politics of inclusive innovation in international development, with a focus on India.
Parthasarathy also directs the Technology Assessment Project, which recently published a report on the implications of large language models, a type of artificial intelligence. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and master&#8217;s and PhD from Cornell University.

<h2>About Gina M. Raimondo, Secretary of Commerce: </h2>

Raimondo serves as the 40th U.S. Secretary of Commerce and was sworn in by Vice President Kamala Harris on March 3, 2021.
As Secretary of Commerce, she is focused on a simple but vital mission — to spur good-paying jobs, empower entrepreneurs to innovate and grow, and help American workers and businesses compete.
Secretary Raimondo was formerly the 75th Governor of Rhode Island and its first woman governor. She grew up in Smithfield in a tight-knit Italian American family. Her family history and her childhood experiences shaped her core beliefs in hard work, opportunity for all, and the importance of financial security.
She graduated with honors from Harvard, where she was recognized as the top economics student in her class. She won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University where she earned a doctorate and met her future husband, Andy Moffit. She later graduated from Yale Law School. Secretary Raimondo clerked for US District Judge Kimba Wood and served as founding employee and senior vice president at Village Ventures.
Wanting to start her own business and be close to family, she returned home to Rhode Island and founded Point Judith Capital, a venture capital firm. In November 2010, Secretary Raimondo was elected to serve as General Treasurer of Rhode Island, receiving the largest number of votes of any statewide candidate. When she took office as General Treasurer, she tackled the state’s $7 billion unfunded pension liability. Secretary Raimondo was sworn into office as Governor in January 2015 and won a second term in 2018. During her time as Governor, Secretary Raimondo kick-started the state’s economy and made record investments in infrastructure, education, and job training. She focused on creating economic opportunities and good-paying jobs for all Rhode Islanders. Early in her administration, she launched an innovative workforce development program that develops business-led partnerships to address unique workforce challenges.
She also served as chair of the Democratic Governors’ Association in 2019.
<h2>About Betsey Stevenson, Professor of Public Policy and Economics:</h2>

Her research explores women’s labor market experiences, the economic forces shaping the modern family, and how these experiences and forces influence each other. She served as the chief economist of the U.S. Department of Labor from 2010 to 2011, participating as the secretary’s deputy to the White House economic team.

<a href="https://nato.usmission.gov/ambassador-julianne-smith/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ambassador Smith</a> has served as the U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO since November 2021. Prior to her current position, she served as a Senior Advisor to Secretary Antony Blinken at the Department of State and previously served as the Director of the Asia and Geopolitics Programs at the German Marshall Fund of the United States.
Ambassador Smith will give brief remarks, followed by a conversation with Ford School&#8217;s Weiser Diplomacy Center <a href="https://diplomacy.umich.edu/faculty/john-ciorciari" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Director John Ciorciari</a> about the war in Ukraine and adapting to meet the global challenges of the world.

From 2012-2013, she served as the Acting National Security Advisor and Deputy National Security Advisor to the Vice President of the United States. Before her post at the White House, she served for three years as the principal director for European and NATO Policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense in the Pentagon. In January 2012, she was awarded the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service.
Prior to her government service, Ambassador Smith held a variety of positions at research institutions including the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the German Marshall Fund, the American Academy in Berlin, and the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik in Berlin. She has written extensively on transatlantic relations and European security.
Ambassador Smith is a recipient of the Richard von Weizsäcker Fellowship at the Bosch Academy in Berlin and the Fredin Memorial Scholarship for study at the Sorbonne in Paris. A native of Michigan, she received her BA from Xavier University and her M.A from American University. She spent a year learning German at the University of Munich. In 2017, she received the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
<h2>About the Vandenberg Lecture:</h2>
The Meijer Family established the Vandenberg Fund in 2017 to honor U.S. Senator Arthur Vandenberg, who served the State of Michigan in the U.S. Senate from 1928-1951. Senator Vandenberg forged bipartisan support for our country&#8217;s most significant and enduring foreign policies of the twentieth century, including the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, NATO and the creation of the United Nations. The Vandenberg Lecture Fund has since featured some of the world&#8217;s leaders in foreign policy including U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Ambassador Samantha Power, among others.

Gretchen Whitmer Headshot" width="200" height="301" />Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is a lifelong Michigander who is focused on getting things done that will make a real difference in people’s lives. As governor, she has signed over 900 bipartisan bills and four balanced, bipartisan budgets to deliver on the kitchen-table issues, grow the economy, and create good-paying jobs in every region of the state.
Since the governor took office, Michigan has announced 25,000 auto jobs, will fix 16,000 lane miles of road and 1,200 bridges by the end of 2022, and funded programs putting tens of thousands of people on tuition-free paths to higher education and skills training. She has worked across the aisle to empower Michigan’s economic development and brought critical supply chains home from China to Michigan. 
The governor has made the largest education investments in state history four years in a row, delivering the highest state per-student funding ever, increasing on-campus mental health resources, and helping hire thousands more qualified teachers. Additionally, the governor has expanded low or no-cost child care to 150,000 kids and enrolled 35,000 four-year-olds in affordable, high-quality pre-K. 
Governor Whitmer has also protected clean water for every community, investing $4 billion to upgrade drinking water infrastructure and replace lead service lines, supporting 57,000 jobs. 
Her leadership has been fiscally responsible, as she has made progress without raising taxes by a dime. She cut taxes for small business owners, paid down nearly $14 billion in debt, and brought the state’s rainy day fund to an all-time high of $1.6 billion.
Governor Whitmer achieved this progress alongside three dynamic elected statewide leaders: Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, Attorney General Dana Nessel, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.

Wallace has won every major broadcast news award for his reporting, including three Emmy Awards, the DuPont-Columbia Silver Baton, the Peabody Award and the Sol Taishoff Award for Broadcast Journalism, which was awarded to him by the National Press Foundation. In 2021, he received the Panetta Institute&#8217;s 2021 Jefferson-Lincoln Award. In 2020, he was honored with the Poynter Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Journalism.
He was named No. 1 on Mediaite&#8217;s Most Influential in News Media for his &#8220;clear-eyed reporting, analysis and commentary throughout the year.&#8221; Wallace also received the ICFJ Founders Award for Excellence in Journalism for &#8220;his unbiased, piercing approach to interviews.&#8221; In 2013, Wallace earned the Paul White Award for lifetime achievement and service to electronic journalism from the Radio Television Digital News Association.
Wallace is also the New York Times bestselling author of &#8220;Countdown bin Laden: The Untold Story of the 247-Day Hunt to Bring the Mastermind of 9/11 to Justice&#8221; and &#8220;Countdown 1945: The Extraordinary Story of the Atomic Bomb and the 116 Days That Changed the World.&#8221;
Before joining FOX, Wallace worked at ABC News for 14 years, serving as the chief correspondent for &#8220;PrimeTime&#8221; and a substitute host for &#8220;Nightline.&#8221; Prior to ABC, Wallace was NBC&#8217;s chief White House correspondent and moderated &#8220;Meet the Press,&#8221; making him the only person to have hosted two Sunday talk shows. He also anchored the Sunday edition of NBC Nightly News. A graduate of Harvard University, Wallace began his career as a city hall reporter for The Boston Globe.

He is the author of “The Substance of Hope: Barack Obama and the Paradox of Progress” and “To the Break of Dawn: A Freestyle on the Hip Hop Aesthetic.” He is the editor or co-editor of several volumes, including “The Matter of Black Lives,” a collection of The New Yorker’s writings on race, and “The Essential Kerner Commission Report.” He is the producer or co-producer on a number of documentaries, including “Lincoln’s Dilemma,” “Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union” and “Policing the Police.”
Dr. Cobb was educated at Jamaica High School in Queens, New York; Howard University, where he earned a B.A. in English; and Rutgers University, where he completed his M.A. and doctorate in American history in 2003. He received fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the Fulbright Foundation and the Shorenstein Center at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the University of Michigan <a href="https://fordschool.umich.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ford School of Public Policy</a> welcomes former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson.
<a href="https://www.dhs.gov/jeh-johnson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Johnson</a> will kick off the event by reflecting on the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., and what that means to him as a fellow Morehouse Man. Following his remarks, he’ll sit down for a conversation with Dean Celeste Watkins-Hayes alongside Ford School faculty experts to reflect on his work with the <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Department of Homeland Security</a> and <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Department of Defense</a> through questions submitted from the Ford School community on policy issues ranging from immigration to civil liberties.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-28618" src="https://wordpress.detroitpbs.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Jeh_Johnson_official_DHS_portrait.jpeg" alt="Jeh Johnson" width="200" height="250" />Jeh Johnson is a partner in the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton &amp; Garrison, LLP, who in public life was Secretary of Homeland Security (2013-2017), General Counsel of the Department of Defense (2009-2012), General Counsel of the Department of the Air Force (1998-2001), and an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York (1989-1991).
As Secretary of Homeland Security, Johnson was the head of the third largest cabinet department of the U.S. government, consisting of 230,000 personnel and 22 components, including TSA, Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Services, U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Coast Guard, the Secret Service, and FEMA.
As General Counsel of the Department of Defense, Johnson is credited with being the legal architect for the U.S. military’s counterterrorism efforts in the Obama Administration. In 2010, Johnson co-authored the report that paved the way for the repeal of the Don&#8217;t Ask, Don&#8217;t Tell by Congress later that year.
Johnson is a 2022 recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, a 2021 recipient of the American Lawyer’s Lifetime Achievement Award, as “an American statesman [who] has devoted his career to the public interest,” and a 2018 recipient of the Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Award, presented at the Reagan Presidential Library, for “contribut[ing] greatly to the defense of our nation,” and “guiding us through turbulent times with courage and wisdom.”
In private life, in addition to practicing law, Johnson is on the board of directors of Lockheed Martin, U.S. Steel, the Council on Foreign Relations, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City, the Center for a New American Security, and is a trustee of Columbia University. Johnson is a regular commentator on NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, FOX, Bloomberg TV and other news networks. Johnson is a graduate of Morehouse College (1979) and Columbia Law School (1982) and the recipient of 12 honorary degrees.

<h2>About the Speaker: </h2>
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-28028" src="https://wordpress.detroitpbs.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Christopher-Wray-FBI.webp" alt="Christopher Wray" width="200" height="250" />Christopher Wray became the eighth Director of the FBI on August 2, 2017. Wray began his law enforcement career in 1997, serving in the Department of Justice as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. In that role, Mr. Wray prosecuted a wide variety of federal criminal cases, including public corruption, gun trafficking, drug offenses, and financial fraud.
In 2001, Mr. Wray was named associate deputy attorney general, and then principal associate deputy attorney general, in the Office of the Deputy Attorney General in Washington, D.C. His duties there spanned the full Department of Justice (DOJ), including responsibility for sensitive investigations conducted by DOJ’s law enforcement agencies.
Wray was nominated by President George W. Bush in 2003 to be the assistant attorney general for DOJ’s Criminal Division, supervising major national and international criminal investigations and prosecutions. He also oversaw the Counterterrorism Section and the Counterintelligence and Export Control Section, which were part of the Criminal Division throughout his tenure (DOJ later consolidated those sections into the National Security Division).
He was a member of the President’s Corporate Fraud Task Force, supervised the Enron Task Force, and served as a leader in DOJ’s post-9/11 efforts to combat terrorism, espionage, and cybercrime with domestic and foreign government partners. At the conclusion of his tenure, Mr. Wray was awarded the Edmund J. Randolph Award, DOJ’s highest award for leadership and public service.
Wray was born in New York City. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Yale University in 1989 and earned his law degree from Yale Law School in 1992. He clerked for Judge J. Michael Luttig of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. In 1993, Mr. Wray joined the international law firm of King &amp; Spalding LLP, where he spent a total of almost 17 years practicing law in the area of government investigations and white-collar crime. At the time of his nomination to be FBI Director, Mr. Wray was chair of the firm’s Special Matters and Government Investigations Practice Group.

<h2>About the Josh Rosenthal Memorial Lecture</h2>
In 2002, the Ford School received a gift from the family and friends of Josh Rosenthal, a University of Michigan graduate who was killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center. The Rosenthal Lecture has since become an important moment of the University’s academic year, intended to promote an understanding of international relations, human rights, security, and conflict resolution in our post-9/11 world.
